and a horse.

My daughter loved a horse named Makita. When that horse was suddenly sold, the loss broke her heart—and I could not find a way to make it right.
Much later, I discovered that she was still using Makita’s name as her phone passcode. She had stepped away from riding, but that small detail showed me how much the bond still meant to her.
I got quiet and made a choice: I wanted to provide a horse she could love without the fear of another lease ending. I did not yet know how I could afford it.
In the weeks that followed, a new work opportunity arrived. I accepted it, my income grew, and we began looking for a horse. Athena eventually became part of our lives.
I experienced that sequence as a profound connection between an inward choice and the possibilities that followed. It became one of the stories at the heart of this book.
